Down hang on for draw with fiery Wicklow

11 March 2020

A HARD-FOUGHT draw against Wicklow at Teconnaught on Sunday keeps Down Ladies on course for a place in the Division 3 League final.

With Kildare beating Roscommon, it means a win away to Laois on March 22, will secure a final berth, ahead of playing Kildare at home in the final league fixture.

As usual this winter, the wind was strong and favoured Down in the first half, although the home side failed to make full use of it. Too often the ball was lost in transition from defence to attack, with passes going astray or overhit and carried out by the wind.

Wicklow looked dangerous in attack and were patient in possession. At half-time the teams were inseparable at six points each.

Facing into the wind in the second half, Down noticeably upped their intensity and performance.

Down’s defence was rock solid and while the link play, breaking forward was much better, there were a couple of goal opportunities that went abegging, on a day when a goal would have won the game.

Down felt they definitely should have had a penalty when Natasha Ferris was pushed from behind, but unfortunately the referee saw an infringement in the opposite direction.

With neither team able to pull clear, the game ended in a draw.

Down scorers: Natasha Ferris (0-5), Jessica Foy (0-2), Sarah Dougherty (0-1), Eimear Fitzpatrick (0-1), Aoife Keown (0-1), Kate McKay (0-1).

Down Ladies 0-11
