Down close in on last four

Down close in on last four

10 July 2019

DOWN camogs took another step towards qualification for the semi-finals when they blitzed Carlow at Pairc Esler on Saturday afternoon.

The home side started in a hurry and stormed into a 2-16 to 0-2 interval lead, Carlow’s only scores coming from two pointed frees.

Down were strong in all departments, but they had the star of the show in Portaferry’s Niamh Mallon, who helped herself to 1-14, with only three points coming from frees.

Mallon received great support from Castlewellan’s Sorcha McCartan who helped set Down on their way with a cracking goal in the 16th minute to put her side 1-7 to 0-1 clear.

Mallon grabbed Down’s second goal just after the break and a double from Catherine McGourty was the icing on the cake as the Down

management team emptied their bench.

The only negative on the day came when Sara Louise Carr had to leave the action in the first half with what appeared to be a calf injury and she must now be a serious doubt for the big game with Derrry on July 20.

Down sit top of their group alongside Tipperary with Derry only a point behind and a win against their Ulster rivals would surely secure a place in the last four.
