Double for Danny boy

Double for Danny boy

A DOWNPATRICK teenager was the talk of the racing world at the weekend.

Seventeen year-old Daniel McMenamin, who is attached to the Nicky Richards stable at Greystoke, in Cumbria, lit up the Ayr meeting in Scotland with a fantastic double.

Ayr is definitely a happy hunting ground for the young jockey as he rode his first winner under rules there in March, also for Richards.

McMenamin, who hails from a famous sporting family, won the fourth race on the card, the Schweppes 1783 handicap hurdle over three miles, on the 3/1 shot Taking Risks.

He then guided Ribble Valley, the 2/1 favourite, to victory in the Coke Zero Maiden NH flat race for conditional jockeys and amateur riders over two miles — helping himself to a first ever double.

The young jockey rode numerous winners on the pony racing circuit in Ireland and on the point-to-point scene with Ballynoe’s Brian Hamilton before trying his luck across the water

He has been at the Richards yard for just over a year now and is determined to make his mark in an extremely competitive sport.
