Children help to celebrate anniversary of local estate

26 September 2012

AN inscribed granite boulder marking the 60th anniversary of the Ardmeen Green housing estate in Downpatrick was officially unveiled last weekend.

Constructed in 1952, the estate is comprised of what’s known locally as the bottom, middle and top greens, with the boulder unveiled on Friday evening by local children Lorcan Perry, Rian McShane, Gerard McCauley and Chloe Ford.

Joining them was Mr. Colum Vaughan, who is heavily involved in the anniversary celebrations and part of a committee which has been established to oversee a number of 60th birthday events.

A fancy dress parade preceded the unveiling of the boulder and Mr. Vaughan said he was delighted with the number of children who took part.

“It was great to see many former and current residents at last weekend’s event which went extremely well. The committee’s thanks go to the Housing Executive and other organisations who helped on the night,” he said.

Meanwhile, a proposed anniversary publication, which it’s hoped will be available by Christmas, will feature photographs and articles highlighting the many people who have lived at Ardmeen Green and events there over the years.

• Anyone with any old photographs of the estate which they would permit to be published in the anniversary book is asked to contact Mr. Vaughan at columv@hotmail.com or telephone 07719 599949.
