Catherine scoops Lorna’s big prize

27 June 2018

A LARGE crowd enjoyed soaring temperatures at Crossgar Golf club at the weekend when Lorna Stevenson hosted her Lady Captain’s Day.

The ladies’ section was extremely competitive. Joyce Dodd got off to a flyer with a great front nine, but couldn’t keep the momentum going and had to settle for the front nine prize.

In contrast, Patricia Magee recovered from a poor start and finished strongly to win the back nine prize.

The category B prize was won by Nuala Hynds with the ever-consistent Rosie Boulter claiming the category A prize, but the winner on the day was a delighted former lady captain Catherine Milhench with a brilliant 41 points.

The past lady captains’ trophy was won by Marie McGrogan and the committee prize by Barbara Giffin. The guests’ prize went to Anne O’Prey with another guest, Margaret MacNabb, winning the longest drive.

The men’s event was also strongly contested with a large field taking part.  Paddy Mahon continued his good vein of form, setting the early pace with a well-constructed 38 points before Killyleagh barman Brian O’Hare hit the front with 39 points.

This somewhat surprisingly looked like it was going to be the winning score until veteran Tom Ferguson, out late in the afternoon, signed for 41 points to claim his first ‘major’ for a few years.

Predictably, David Watson won the gross with his son, Curtis, continuing his progress in winning the juvenile prize. The guests’ prize went the way of Paddy Bell and Gary Kennedy nailed the longest drive with Mathew Woods winning nearest the pin.

The lady captain had also sponsored two other competitions in the run-up to the big day and presented prizes as follows: mixed competition, Rosie Boulter and Jimmy Keenan; nine-hole pairs competition, Catherine Milhench and Mae Glover.

A large crowd joined the lady captain for her presentation night and during her speech she paid particular thanks to all the ground staff who had worked tirelessly to have the course in such good condition.

She also thanked McCarthy’s Catering for the food and everyone enjoyed the music provided by The Whole Hogg late into the night.
