THERE was double delight at St. Malachy’s High School last week as two pupils received the Child of Courage awards.

Conan Brogan (17) and John James Fisher (16) were presented with the award by Chief Executive of the South Eastern Education and Library Board, Gregory Butler. The award celebrates courage in the face of adversity, demonstrating determination and bravery.

Conan, who is now in year 14, received the award after having an extremely difficult time medically. “Most of us would allow this illness to win, not Conan. He is really inspirational,” said head of business studies Mrs. Clare Vernon.

“Conan managed to receive a pass in business studies even though he wasn’t well enough to sit the exam,” she added.

John was also presented with the award for his brave endeavours.

“John was unfortunately taken ill at the very beginning of year 12 in 2011,” explained Clare Murmin, head of year 13.

“Showing great determination he took his GCSE examinations and passed them all. He is a perfect example of determination to all our students,” she added.

“He is now staring a new chapter in year 13 and has a very bright future ahead of him.

Both teachers noted Conan and John’s ability to look forward in striving for success. They outlined the boys’ willingness to succeed and a desire to carry on, praising their strength of mind.
