Artistic Newcastle pupils win tree for their school

12 July 2011

PUPILS at Newcastle’s All Children’s Integrated Primary School have won a new tree thanks to their entry in a major competition catching the eye of the judges.

The tree was a prize awarded for the Newcastle schoolchildren’s scarecrow Blossom, which won the overall award in a competition for integrated primary schools hosted by Garden Show Ireland in May.

Each year, children are invited to get creative and come up with an interesting or scary character to stand in Scarecrow Street at the entrance to the show.

The contest is sponsored by Allianz and organised by the Integrated Education Fund and it wasn’t just the entry from the Newcastle school which impressed the judges.

The Newcastle pupils headed off to the CAFRE campus at Greenmount in Antrim recently to collect their tree where they were joined by children from Ballynahinch’s Drumlins Primary and Crossgar’s Cedar Primary who secured runners-up awards.

After receiving their prize, the Newcastle children joined with other award-winners to explore part of the grounds of the college and learn how to estimate the age of a tree.
