A BALLYNAHINCH student has won a science competition by creating a poster for cancer research.
Aaron Carlisle, who is a student at Dromore High School, won the prize in a competition jointly organised by Cancer Research UK and Queen’s University.
The As-level biology students taking part had to pretend they were the Marketing Manager for the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology (CCRCB) at Queen’s University and create an advertising poster.
The idea was to call for donations from the target audience for cancer research explaining the need for investment and its benefit to patients.
Entry to the competition included a day for students at the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology to give practical experience of labs and to learn about techniques used in cancer research, relevant to the A-level biology specification.
The visiting students also had the chance to take part in a career speed dating session with researchers from different types of cancer research.
Presenting Aaron with an iPad, courtesy of the Almac Group, Professor David Waugh, Director of the Belfast Cancer Research UK Centre said his poster “contained powerful imagery, was very creative yet informative and strongly persuasive.”
