50 year celebration for Dominican Sister

23 November 2011

A New York woman with links to Killyleagh and Downpatrick has celebrated the Golden Jubilee of her religious profession.

Sister Patricia Broderick is a member of the Dominican Sisters based at Sparkhill in the city and was one of 12 who recently celebrated their golden jubilee. The Dominican Sisters was founded 135 years ago.

Sister Patricia is the daughter of Patrick and Rosaleen Broderick (nee Henderson), originally from Killyleagh. The family emigrated and Patricia was brought up in New York.

Sister Patricia is the niece of the late Mrs. Margaret Morrow of Seaview in Killyleagh and a cousin of Newcastle woman Helena Cartan.

Over the past 15 years Sister Patricia has been a frequent visitor to Downpatrick, staying with the Sisters at the Convent of Mercy which she refers to her as her “second home.”

Sister Patricia’s golden jubilee celebrations were held at the Mother House of the Dominican Sisters in Spankhill, with the ceremony attended by Sister Vianney from the Convent of Mercy and family friend Una Wallace.
