100 homes planned for outskirts of Downpatrick

AMBITIOUS plans have been unveiled to build almost 100 new private homes in Downpatrick.

An application seeking full permission for the proposed development has been lodged with the Planning Service.

Land opposite and adjacent to the Ardfern development on the Saul Road has been identified for the major housing scheme.

Planning permission is being sought for 52 semi-detached homes, 21 bungalows, eight terraced houses and six detached homes.

Councillor Dermot Curran has welcomed the planning application and hopes it will help kick-start the recovery of the local construction industry.

“It’s my understanding that the land earmarked for the new homes has been zoned for housing under the area plan. The construction of so many homes represents a major boost for Downpatrick and I hope this scheme can secure planning approval,” he continued.

Councillor Curran said he believes the proposed scheme is further evidence of the local economy’s recovery.

He added: “It is encouraging that plans for such a huge development have been lodged with the Planning Service. There is evidence to suggest a recovery in the local housing market and this proposed scheme will provide a significant boost.

“While the new housing scheme is at an early stage, I hope planning approval can be secured so the developers behind the proposal can get to work as soon as possible.”
