Young people are celebrated

THE South Eastern Education and Library Board has celebrated the achievements of over 70 children and young people at its annual awards evening held at Lisburn’s Lagan Valley Island.

Awards were presented in both school and youth categories, celebrating the diversity of achievement in a range of areas including the arts, service to the community, pupils of courage, sport, academic success, youth achievement and full attendance. The Tom Nolan Memorial Award for Poetry was also presented with the winner of the Board’s Christmas card competition also revealed.

The evening was compared by BBC Northern Ireland’s Donna Traynor with the programme including performances from three award winners who displayed their singing and violin skills.

Almost 300 people including children and young people, parents, school principals, youth leaders, guests, South Eastern Board Commissioners and public representatives.

Event sponsorship was provided by Fujitsu, Translink, the Department of Education, Castlereagh Borough Council and Lisburn City Council.

South Eastern Board chief executive, Gregory Butler, described the annual event as a “wonderful opportunity” to celebrate and applaud the achievements of many young people.

 

He added: “ The Board is delighted that, with the support of our sponsors, it has once again been possible to organise this evening’s ceremony to acknowledge the diversity of achievement and incredible talents and skills within schools and youth services across the Board’s area.”
