Ten tries run in by the lads

Ten tries run in by the lads

BALLYNAHINCH U-16s retained their 100% record in the eastern section of the U-16 league with an excellent ten-try victory over a game but outclassed Ballyclare side.

Despite the torrential rain on Friday the pitches at Ballymacarn Park were in perfect order for running rugby and the boys did not disappoint.

Despite missing three key forwards, the pack dominated the scrum and breakdown to supply a stream of quality ball for the backs to exploit.

The line speed in defence was excellent after all the hard work in training under Brian McLaughlin during the week.

Ballynahinch scored five tries in each half and Ballyclare had no answer to the pace of

Cameron Lyons and Cameron Patterson in midfield and the power of Matthew Torney, Morgan Croskery and Shaun Lin up front.

Lyons scored a hat-trick, while Patterson weighed in with a brace and Torney, Mark MacAleenan and Harry McCarroll were also on the scoresheet.

Flanker Kai Shields made the most of his first start of the season, scoring twice during an eye-catching display in the back row.

Front rower Logan Mallon put in his best shift of the season, dominating the scrums and showing excellent off-loading ability while fly half Dan Hewitt knocked over six conversions and led the line well in attack and defence.

With seven replacements also getting game time, selection for this weekend’s top of the table clash at home to Malone could prove difficult.

The U-16s continue to show real promise and are progressing well with the quality of their Wednesday night sessions under Kyle McCall and Brian McLaughlin building real structure to their play.

Their pride in keeping their line intact is particularly impressive and they have conceded just one try in the league this season.

However, they will need to be at their best to get a result against Malone and all support will be greatly appreciated.
