Start expected for castle visitor centre

30 July 2014

WORK on a new visitor centre at Dundrum Castle is expected to get underway before the end of the financial year.

The news was confirmed yesterday by Stormont Environment Minister Mark Durkan during a visit to the village where he met South Down MP Margaret Ritchie.

Miss Ritchie said Minister Durkan confirmed consultants working on the style and location of the new visitor centre will shortly be making their recommendations, allowing for work to commence on site during the current financial year.

“It is vital we continue to progress this scheme and see the new visitor centre open at the earliest possible opportunity,” said the MP.

“This new centre will provide a great boost for the tourism economy in Dundrum and the wider South Down area.”

Miss Ritchie believes that to fully embrace the area’s heritage and tourism assets and receive the full economic benefit for the community in South Down, there must be capital investment in projects like the Dundrum Castle Visitor Centre.

She added: “I will continue to pursue this project and other tourism initiatives to ensure they are brought to completion.”
