Project aims to find Down’s film makers

25 September 2013

HAVE a great idea for a short film? Down Community Arts wants to hear from you. Its ‘Film 300’ community project aims to unearth hidden film making talent in Down District — supporting 10 films with a series of training workshops and a small £200 budget.

Supported by Eclipse Cinemas Downpatrick and Newcastle Community Cinema, Down Community Arts (DCA) will help applicants develop their skills in writing, storyboarding, sound, lighting and editing.

The organisation will also be making available its office space for the budding film makers to aid the production of their film.

DCA will be premiering the films at Eclipse Cinemas in March 2014. The organisation is also keen to link up with other groups working in the community that have an interest in film.

DCA Project Manager, Philip Campbell, said the project had been designed regardless of ability so there was no excuse not to get involved.

“We are aware that there is real interest in film through a few recent projects working with young people in the community,” he said. “We at DCA feel that it’s worth developing a project that allows people to express themselves creatively through the medium of film.

“For anyone involved we can guarantee that they’ll have a great time learning new skills in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.”

Michelle O’Hare, of Eclipse Cinemas, said they were delighted to be hosting the movie premiere event.

“The red carpet event will consist of the premiere screening of the short films as well as the chance to meet with the various casts,” she said. “We are very excited to be able to see the local acting talent on our big screen.”

Speaking on behalf of Newcastle Community Cinema, its chairman Rob Manley said: “Newcastle Community Cinema is very excited in teaming up with Down Community Arts and Eclipse Cinema’s for the Film 300 project. “We believe it’s a great opportunity to nurture local emerging talent. We are very excited about our new partnerships and look forward to helping this new initiative flourish over time.”

The closing date for applications is October 31. To apply complete an application form accessible from DCA’s website at www.downcommunityarts.org
