Petition launched to save Rock Pool

AN on-line petition has been launched to save Newcastle’s Rock Pool from closure.

The Down Recorder exclusively revealed this week that Newry, Mourne and Down Council is controversially suggesting closing the iconic outdoor sea water pool at South Promenade as part of a raft of cost cutting measures.

Politicians have been told that closing the cross-community facility — which  is over 100 years old — would save £45,000.

The Rock Pool, which is the last open air sea water swimming pool in Ireland, has provided generations of local people, sports enthusiasts and visitors to the resort the opportunity to learn water safety, lifesaving and swimming in a unique cold sea water environment.

Over 600 people have already signed the Facebook petition which has almost 1,400 “likes” to date. The petition calls on Newry, Mourne and Down Council to “remove immediately” the threat of closure and provide a commitment to keeping the Rock Pool open for present and future generations of swimmers, sports people and visitors to Newcastle.
