Mountain climbers raise thousands for cancer charity

27 July 2016

A GROUP of almost 20 people who braved poor weather conditions to climb Slieve Donard for the first time earlier this month raised just over £2,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Joanne Mills, a personal trainer at the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa, set a challenge for charity volunteer Paula Smyth to to climb Slieve Donard and take with her as many people as possible who had never been to the top before to raise funds for Cancer Research.

The July 9 challenge was not favoured with good weather but the 19 people who made it to the top raised £2,035.

The money was handed over to the charity recently by Mr Archie Bingham, his wife Joan and the local branch secretary, Jenny Coburn. Joining them at the presentation ceremony was Matilda Harty, the youngest person to take part in the fundraiser, her sister Daisy and Cancer Research volunteer Paula Smyth.
