Minister wants Dundrum road crossing survey

27 July 2016

STORMONT Minister Chris Hazzard has confirmed a survey is be carried out at Dundrum’s Main Street into a call for a new pedestrian crossing.

Mr Hazzard said he has agreed a survey should take place given the increased number of pedestrians in the vicinity of Brennan’s Vivo store and petrol station. He also confirmed surveys are not normally carried out during school holidays so the Main Street exercise has been pencilled in for the autumn.

The news has been welcomed by councillor Patrick Clarke who has been lobbying for a new crossing given the high volume of traffic which passes Main Street daily. He has no doubt there is a need for a new crossing.

“There has been a considerable increase in the number of people and vehicles in the vicinity of the Vivo store and there is a clear need for a new pedestrian crossing to make this area much safer,” said Councillor Clarke.

“I recently pointed this out to Mr Hazzard and am pleased he has agreed that a traffic survey will now be carried out to assess if a controlled pedestrian crossing can now be justified.”

Councillor Clarke said he has been advised Transport NI’s southern division will carry out the survey and that he will be provided with an update when the exercise is completed later in the autumn.

He added: “I would like to thank Mr Hazzard for allowing an update further survey to be carried out close to a major store when the current post office opening hours are to be extended.”
