5 December 2018

THE new Down Leisure Centre is proving to be a major hit with ratepayers.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairman Mark Murnin — who officially opened the new £16m complex — has revealed that membership numbers are twice what they were in the old building it replaced.

The news was confirmed at the local authority’s last monthly meeting of the year on Monday night and was described by the chairman as “fantastic news”.

Cllr Murnin said the leisure centre’s membership numbers have doubled within a week of the  complex opening.

Boasting ultra-modern equipment, council officials say the magnificent and futuristic centre heralds an exciting new dawn in the history of leisure provision across the district.

The opening of the new multi-million pound facility also coincides with a major drive to encourage people to be more active with the stunning complex boasting a range of facilities.

The three-storey, 6,100 square metre centre includes an 85 station wellness gymnasium featuring cutting edge technology, a 26 station spin studio, 25 metre six lane swimming pool, luxury vitality health suite including a sauna, steam room and vitality pool.

There is a four-court sports halls, multi-purpose spaces and a teaching pool with moveable floor, with a fantastic health suite having its own dedicated relaxation area.

The new centre is almost double the size of the out-dated building it replaces which opened in 1980 and which will shortly be bulldozed to pave the way for major new car park.
