NEWCASTLE Glees and St Patrick’s Choral Society are celebrating wins at the Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) annual musical theatre awards.

Newcastle Glee Singers won a Best Actress award for Emma Nugent and achieved runner up in the Best Actor category for Jay Walsh. The awards were for their production of 9 to 5.

St Patrick’s Choral Society won Best Supporting Actor for Fergal White in the recent production of Sunset Boulevard. The group also won Best Technical Award for the same production.

Fergal played the role of butler Max von-Mayerling.

The AIMS event was held in front of 1200 musical theatre aficionados in the INEC, Killarney.

Chair of Newry Mourne and Down Council, Gillian Fitzpatrick, said bringing back three awards for the district was “fantastic”.

“However every nominee were already winners,” she said. “Local talent is outstanding.”
