George Glen king at Quoile Regatta

WARM sunshine greeted an 80-stong fleet for Quoile Yacht Club’s annual regatta on Saturday.

Initial light airs provided race officials with a few worries early on, but the wind filled in later in the afternoon and provided ideal regatta conditions.

There were plenty of happy faces, none more so than octogenarian George Bloch, from Whiterock, who proved once again that age is no handicap as he romped home in the Glen fleet.

There were a few usual suspects among the other winners, including Raymond Killops, who won the big boat IRC1 fleet in his seemingly unbeatable Elan, Movistar Blue.

Dermot Quinn and Rachel Bennett, from Killyleagh, were popular winners of the Squib class, while Stephen Lynn’s Impala, Mipaal, from East Down, took the honours in the IRC2 class.

The tightest finish of the day came in the highly competitive Flying Fifteen class where Malcolm Crichton and Barry Bridges managed to squeeze home as the chasing fleet descended on the finish line.

The club commodore, Liz Baker, thanked the competitors and everyone at the club, including the race officer, Jody Innes, who worked hard to make it an outstanding day.
