Gabriel well on top in title race

NEWCASTLE Tennis Club’s internal summer leagues are now up and running and the junior players have clearly been using their summer holidays to get time on court.

Two weeks into the season, 13 year-old Gabriel Corrigan has raced into a commanding position at the head of the singles league, having played and won 11 matches already.

Following him in the table are Jack Cunningham, Cormac Burns, Joseph Roseingrave, Michael Flanagan, Aaron McAnulty, Daniel Shiel, Fintan Hayes, Philip George and Ross McCrickard.

But, with the league set to run until the end of September and with most players still to make their debut, league positions could change radically over the course of the season.

In the seniors’ singles league, only a couple of matches have taken place, leaving Eugene McGuigan and Gabrielle Burns to head the table.

Meanwhile, the full returns from the club’s open day have now come in, with an impressive 70 new members taking advantage of the special promotional membership rates on offer on open day.

The club wishes to express its thanks for the support given by Down District Council and Tesco as well as the volunteer efforts of existing members.

Four summer scheme tennis weeks will be available for junior players during July and August, delivered by coach Hazel Carder: weeks 21-25 July, 28 July-1 August, 11-16 August, 18-22 August (start 9am-11am). Cost £20 per person.
