GAA clubs punished for league brawl

17 October 2018

DOWNPATRICK RGU and Ballyholland Harps have been banned from taking part in next year’s Down Senior Football Championship.

The Down County Board has imposed the harsh punishment following the ugly scenes which occurred at a recent league match between the clubs.

It is understood that all adult teams from both clubs have been banned from playing championship football next year. Individual players are also believed to have been handed punishments.

Both clubs declined to make statements last night. A spokesman for the county board was unavailable.

The trouble occurred at an All County Football League Division 1 game which was being replayed at the neutral venue of Kilcoo after a previous encounter between the clubs was abandoned due to an injury to a Ballyholland player.
