A FORMER priest is to stand trial on historical sexual abuse charges.

Daniel Curran (64), of Bryansford Avenue, Newcastle, is accused of two charges of indecent assault and two of gross indecency with or towards a child.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in Down on unknown dates between August 8, 1990 and August 7, 1995.

At a preliminary inquiry held  at Downpatrick Magistrate’s  Court on Thursday, District Judge Eamon King ruled there was a case to answer.

When asked if he wanted to respond to the charges at this stage, Curran said: “Not at this time.”

Curran was released on bail of £500 to appear back in Downpatrick Crown Court on December 8.
