Erin appointed Spa captain

15 May 2013

SPA Golf Club’s commitment to the promotion and development of its junior girls’ section has been underscored by a number of initiatives introduced within the past few weeks.

The appointment of teenager Erin Leeper as the first juvenile girls’ captain in the 106-year history of the club is clear recognition of the increasing number of girls taking up the sport at Spa while participation in the Irish Ladies’ Golfing Union (ILGU) sponsored Junior Development

Erin who has been a junior member at Spa for the past five years said she was “delighted and honoured” to be appointed captain when she was formally presented with her badge of office by lady captain Sally Ann Douglas last week.

Under the watchful guidance of former teacher Carole Mills, Spa’s junior girls’ convenor, this section of the club has grown both in number and enthusiasm with weekly competitions on Tuesday evenings during the summer months.

As part of this development programme three assistant technical professionals from Royal County Down — John Murray, Alex Shedden and Gareth Quigley — are providing weekly coaching sessions for the junior girls at Spa.

But perhaps the greatest bonus derived from the commitment to the juniors is the number of talented young golfers who have or are about to join the senior ranks — a development that augurs well for the future of Spa Golf Club.

Any girl interested in joining Spa should contact Carole Mills at the club.
