Couple face child cruelty charges

A COUPLE have appeared in court charged with child cruelty.

The man, from Killyleagh, and the woman, with an address elsewhere in Down, appeared at Downpatrick Court last Tuesday.

The pair cannot be named due to an interim order from the court to protect the child’s identity.

Both are charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and causing cruelty to a child under the age of 16.

The assault offence is alleged to have occurred in February and the cruelty charge relates to a two year period leading up this date.

At Tuesday’s hearing a police officer said she believed she could connect the accused to the offences.

The couple spoke only to confirm they understood the charges. They were released on bail to appear back in court on September 7. Both were ordered not to have contact with each other or any witness in the case.
