PERFORMANCES of the King and I by St Patrick’s Choral Society start this evening in the Great Hall and run until Saturday.
East versus West for The King and I, which makes for a dramatic and ultimately uplifting tale.
The musical is set 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives.
The king is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways.
While both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a unique love story.
The score also includes favourites ‘I Whistle A Happy Tune’, ‘Hello Young Lovers’, ‘Getting To Know You’, ‘Something Wonderful’ and ‘Shall We Dance’?
Tickets are available from Downpatrick Visitor Information Centre situated in the St. Patrick’s Centre on 028 4461 2233.
There is a special rate for the Wednesday performance, with all tickets only £8. Thursday, Friday and Saturday tickets are priced at £10.00. The shows start at 7.30pm.
