A BALLYNAHINCH girl has received her international cricket call-up.

Fourteen year-old Cara Murray is with the Ireland U-17 girls’ team currently involved in a four-match series with Scotland.

Despite being one of the youngest members of the team, Cara is one of the key players and is already being tipped as a star in the making.

A member of Saintfield Cricket Club, she has been playing for the club’s youth teams since she was nine years old, starting with the U-11s and progressing through to the U-13s and U-15s. She has also played for Saintfield men’s second and third elevens.

A talented and dangerous leg spin bowler, Cara caught the eye of the NCU selectors who picked her for the NCU U-17 girls’ team and it wasn’t long before she progressed into the Irish Development programme.

Cara, who also plays soccer and hockey, comes with a good pedigree. Her dad, Phliip, is captain of the Saintfield first eleven and also plays hockey for Ballynahinch.

Ireland opened the international series, which is being played near Dublin, with victory by seven wickets on Monday. A second game to be played on Monday fell victim to the weather as torrential rain forced the fixture to be abandoned. A third game was played yesterday and the series ends today.
