Burren hit Castlewellan hard

Burren hit Castlewellan hard

10 September 2014

BURREN’S greater power and physicality saw them past Castlewellan in what transpired to be a disappointing quarter-final tie.

The Town were expected to extend Paddy Carr’s side, but in the end they were well beaten. The first half was nip and tuck with Burren taking a 0-8 to 0-7 interval lead.

Kevin McKernan picked off a few delightful scores while Fintan McGreevy was Castlewellan’s top contributor with three frees. The game turned on its head at the start of the second half.

Kevin Duffin laboured on the ball while advancing from the Town’s rearguard and in the process he was dispossessed. The ball found its way to Sean Murdock who provided the finish to produce the first goal of the battle.

Castlewellan were now on the back foot, but points from McGreevy and Gilmore got their come back on the road after Burren midfielder Conaill McGovern had pointed after Murdock’s goal.

Burren were starting to play with a bit of conviction and McKernan’s third point had them four ahead.

In the 42nd minute the killer blow arrived when Donal O’Hare put the ball past Michael Cunningham after some class build up play between Conaill McGovern and Conor Toner.

Burren were now very comfortable, despite Aidan Burns and Fintan McGreevy grabbing further efforts.

A disallowed Eamon Toner goal failed to dampen their mood as they finished the game out with midfielder Conaill McGovern getting a brace and his partner Conor Toner getting the other.

The only tarnish on Burren’s night was the straight card received by their county star Declan Rooney on the stroke of full time.

Burren’s main players on the night were Cathal Murdock in goal, Gerard McGovern, Kevin McKernan and Ciaran McGovern in the back line, the midfield duo of Conor Toner and Conaill McGovern and the strike force of Cathal Foy, Sean Murdock and Donal O’Hare.

The Town underperformed, but Daniel Morgan, Fintan McGreevy, Paddy Boyle and David Gilmore fought hard for the cause.
